Yoga for the Creative Spirit

When we hear the word creativity, many of us probably think of making art, feeling inspired, creating beauty in the world. I think of all of those things too, and I also think of Earth- the ultimate creative spirit offering up seemingly infinite combinations of colors and creatures and landscapes never the same twice. Earth has taught me about the cyclical process of creation- of seed to sprout to flower to fruit to decay and repeat. It helps me to see that the creative process is not linear and is also not about constant output. We need to take in, to rest, gestate, and germinate to create just as much as we need to outwardly express what it is we are creating.
So this is why I put together Yoga for the Creative Spirit- to nurture and play with these themes of cyclical creativity and creating space in our bodies, minds, and spirits to let creative seeds take root.
So often, the way we do one thing is the way we do everything, so I designed the class to try out a new way of being in creativity with organic movement and expression with hope that it might ripple out into trying out new and intuitive ways of being in other areas of their lives or creative process.
It was truly a delight to move together, be inspired by one another and by the beautiful colors, textures, and shapes of flowers to remind us to sway in the breezes of life and turn our faces up to the sun. They also remind us of the temporality of life and inspiration and that decay is just as essential a part of the process as the blooming.
The students got to explore creativity in organic movement and really listen to their own bodies rhythms and inclinations while being offered gentle guidance and invitation. The sunlight shone through the window to brighten our faces as we practiced tree pose with the hickories outside the pane. Students expressed sincere reflections of gratitude and joy at this opportunity to really slow down and inquire inside to their own creative spirit and to leave the space with renewed energy, fresh flowers, and openness to what’s next while enjoying the process along the way.
It is my honor to hold this space and I look forward to my upcoming offerings of movement medicine with Yoga for Change in September and Yoga for Grief in October. Check out our events calendar to learn more and I would love to breathe and move with you soon!
